To date Al has scored the music for over 200 film and television productions. From wildlife to science fiction, history to contemporary drama, these include some of the most ground breaking shows to air in the UK: "Beyond Boundaries", "The Day Of The Kamikaze", the multi award winning "Anatomy for Beginners", and the winner of the 2007 Hugh Weldon Award at the Baftas - "Nuremburg - Goerings's Last Stand" are recent examples. His music for the "The Fifth Province" has been described by film critic Nicky Fennell as "..possibly the best score I have ever heard in an Irish feature film."
He has collaborated with artists as diverse as Sugababes, St Etienne and Jacqui Dankworth, and recorded highly successful sets of production music for the Atmosphere label of major music company Universal/BMG Zomba. His music featured at the Tate Gallery as an exhibition soundtrack to the film of 2004 Turner Prize nominees Langlands And Bell. WHERE: His studio base is on Spike Island, Bristol, in the southwest of England. It overlooks the city's marina and dry dock, home to Brunel's historic ocean steamer, the "SS Great Britain". THE NAVIGATOR is Al's alternative identity as an independent recording artist. The Navigator guise allows him to explore a different take on music - released from the disciplines of writing to picture.
Some Musical Influences: Bach, Ligetti, Danny Elfman, Pink Floyd, Sun Ra, Eno, Flamenco, Africa, The Celts, Mahler, Jimi Hendrix. Haunting, emotional melodies, along with a strong sense of atmosphere, are hallmarks of The Navigator style, whether the music is written for acoustic guitars, or much larger scale projects, such as an upcoming album inspired by the life of sharks.
